The “Walking the talk – designing youth advocacy with young people” project is a collaboration between The Association for the Wellbeing of Children in Healthcare (AWCH) and Health Consumers NSW (HCNSW).
AWCH and HCNSW were successful in obtaining a Consumer Health Forum (CHF) Youth Health Forum Incubator grant to progress this project over the coming nine months. In addition, we were also successful in obtaining a COMPACT Social Cohesion & Community Resilience Grant through Multicultural NSW in order to target a diverse range of young people. Through this, we will gauge culturally and linguistically diverse young people’s experiences, ideas, and opinions regarding engagement, particularly in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through the work being done by AWCH and HCNSW a substantial need has been identified for engaging with young people more effectively and co-designing engagement strategies, processes and priorities with them. This need is particularly salient within engagement with young people belonging to marginalised groups such as culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
The key outcome for this project is to develop a strategy for both AWCH and HCNSW to better engage young people, building on both organisation’s current youth advocacy activities.
Once the project is completed we will have an effective co-designed youth advocacy and engagement framework and a number of new supports in place to continue this work.
Walking the Talk White Paper
The Association for the Wellbeing of Children in Healthcare and Health Consumers NSW ‘Walking the Talk’ project has launched its first white paper, outlining the current youth engagement landscape and identifying opportunities.
The paper will inform the project as it progresses, along with our youth advocates.
The main findings of the paper were opportunities for:
- intersectionality
- genuine co-design
- improved acknowledgement of young people’s work
- improved follow-up and sustainability of engagement
